Today's a good day to address this common question. I went and picked up a doctor's letter today that is asking the powers that be to expedite Sammy's adoption so that he can get here and get treatment sooner.
This may come as a surprise to some of you, so I will start at the beginning.
Phil and I decided towards the beginning of this process that we wanted to pursue a "special focus" adoption, meaning the child we are matched with will have medical needs that need to be addressed when we get home.
So, thus the question - are we sharing what those needs are? Not yet. For a number of reasons....
1. Although we have seen Sammy's file and know in general what is going on, we just do not know to what extent Sammy is effected by his particular medical issues or the ramifications of them. Once we get home with him, he will be evaluated by a number of specialists who will give him a thorough exam and let us know exactly what his needs are. At this point, we just aren't saying anything since we don't know what to say.
2. We want to be able to have time just enjoying telling people our joyful news and share his name with people. At this point, it seems like it would be a disservice as his mother to tell people what I think his issues will be when nobody has met him.
So, the follow up question that nobody has asked but SOMEONE must be wondering... when will we tell?
I really don't know.
Ya know?
I just don't know when God will prompt us to start talking about it. It might make sense to wait until we actually know what is going on and he's actually been evaluated by the doctors here. But at the same token, I'm not sure how prepared people need to be either. It's definitely something I pray about.
But, I would like to say there is something that is NOT a reason we aren't telling people (did you follow that with the double negative - hahahaha)...
We know that our family and friends will love Sammy for who he is and we are not keeping any of the medical information from anyone because of fear of the opposite.
